Black History Month at Tennessee State University
THINK BIG: Adey Adeola
*Tennessee State University celebrates Black History Month by recognizing individuals or organizations that have made noteworthy contributions to University’s history and are taking the “Think Big, TSU BIG!” approach to their areas of study and expertise while impacting the campus, community and beyond.
When Adey Adeola transferred to Tennessee State University from the Georgia Institute of Technology in fall 2008, she noticed an untapped niche for reporting sports news on campus. After the former student athlete and senior mass communications major from Stone Mountain, Ga., experienced sports reporting for a NCAA Division I institution, she saw an opportunity to recreate the experience at TSU.
“I believed that there were enough resources to create a thriving environment for sports reporting. Students just had to take advantage of them,” Adeola said.
In less than two years, she has created a name for herself on campus as well as the local sports scene. Currently, she serves as sports director for the University’s WTST campus radio where she has a sports talk show, titled “Four Quarters.” She also delivers play-by-play announcing for the Lady Tigers basketball team, hosts post-game interviews for the Tigers football team and produces video packages for the TSU Athletics website.
Even as a single mother, Adeola has not let up in her pursuit to prove that women can and do have a voice in the male-dominated field of sports. She will soon be delivering play-by-play announcing for the Nashville Storm, a local semi-pro football team. Her goal is to call football games for ESPN.
