Tennessee State University Foundation to host annual Scholarship Celebration

The Tennessee State University Foundation will hold its 2010 Scholarship Celebration on Friday, May 7, 6 p. m. at the Marriott Nashville Airport.

With the theme, Our Time to Shine,” the annual event celebrates the University’s fundraising initiative for scholarships while saluting those who have contributed to the fundraising effort.

This year’s event is held in partnership with the Interdenominational Ministers’ Fellowship to further engage the support of the Nashville community and assist the University in meeting its fundraising goal of $500,000 in scholarship support.

“While the level of donor support for academic scholarships has grown over the last four years, there has also been an increase in the number of potential students requesting scholarship assistance,” said Shereitte C. Stokes, III, TSU vice president for University Relations and Development.  “We are glad to have the Interdenominational Ministers’ Fellowship as our community partner this year. It is this type of community support that will enable the University to increase its donor base and assistance to students who otherwise may be left without financial support,” said Stokes.  The event also gives the University a platform to impress upon supporters the need to increase scholarship gifts to TSU.

“Our scholarship celebration is a great opportunity to show our contributors the quality of students their scholarship gifts assist,” said Betsy Jackson, executive director of the TSU Foundation. “Scholarship dollars help TSU attract the best and the brightest. There are many talented students who may not be able to fund their educational pursuits. The scholarship support they receive from private donors helps them to bridge the gap,” she added.

The festivities of the evening will feature a strolling dinner designed to allow guests to interact while dining.  The attire for the evening is business dress.

Dr. Sybril Bennett, former Emmy award winning television news journalist, and Jonathan Martin, co-anchor at WSMV-TV Channel 4 News Today/Saturday, will serve as the evening’s hosts.

For ticket information, please call the Tennessee State University Foundation Office at 615-963-5481 or visit our website at www.tnstate.edu/scholarshipcelebration.
